Athletics Otago - Club Resourses

Club Coaching

In Otago our clubs are run by volunteers.  We encourage teenagers/adults to help out at club night for a number of reasons;

  1. Fundamental movement patterns are essential for our tamariki to lead healthy lifestyles, and helping out provides people with ideas on how to support children in other settings.

  2. Many people end up coaching other sports teams.  Athletics offers foundation skills for multiple sports and provides background knowledge to take to other sporting codes.

  3. Many people rediscover athletics through volunteer involvement and Otago has a fantastic group of Masters athletes to help you stay fit, healthy and have fun socialising with like minded people.

Every club will run their program differently.  We recommend you take advantage of 'give it a go' days which are held at the beginning of every summer season.

Examples of Programs you might find in your club:

Get Set Go (3-8years) This programme provides educational, developmentally- appropriate, fun activities that build and develop children’s basic fundamental movement skills and is used in many Primary School Settings.

Run Jump Throw (6-11years) This program develops athletics-specific skills in a fun, inclusive way that encourages Kiwi kids’ to participate in athletics.

Transition Squads (12-14years) As young athletes master the foundation & athletics-specific skills they can start to learn the technical aspects of the various run, jump, throw events.   Athletics NZ provide CAD certified courses around the country for club coaches who wish to upskill in this area.  Sign up today.

Many athletes choose to join independant training sqauds once at High School.  A list of our current coaches can be found on our Find a Coach Page.

Early specialisation is discouraged. If you want your child to be a better runner, thrower or jumper; they need to be a better all round athlete!
