Athletics Otago - Summer Season

Summer Season - October to April

Combined Track & Field - Childrens & Senior Pending

Event Types

Track and field style events are among the oldest of all sporting competitions, as running, jumping and throwing are natural and universal forms of human physical expression. The first recorded examples of organised track and field events at a sports festival are the Ancient Olympic Games in which only the stadion footrace was contesed.  Later games comprised of a five-event competition of the long jump, javelin throw, discus throw, stadion footrace and wrestling.

Fast forward to 2024 and there are now 44 Track & Field events contested at the Oympic Games.

Athletics Otago run regular Interclub meets throughout the summer season for any club member from any region who has registered as competitive.  We welcome Community & HIgh School Athletes.

The Meets are run from The Caledonaion Ground (The Caley) located at 50 Logan Park Drive, Dunedin North.  Entry is via Anzac Ave which is a one way street.  You can park close to the ground or along Butts Road.

Children's 6-14 typically run in the morning with the following sessions.

Session 1: 9:00am to 10:30am for Grade, 6, 7, 8 & 9

Session 2: 10:30am to 12noon for Grade 10, 11, 12 13 14

Events are open to members who have registered competitive.  However, the first 3 Interclub days in October are "give it a go" days for any child to take part.

Children rotate around 4 events in their age group & are encouraged to partipicate in every thing offered.   Children do not need to enter online.  If they are registered competitive they just need to turn up on the day.
The program alters weekly & is advertised on Children's Facebook.

Children in Year 8 and Year 9 at school may enter a Senior Competiton by entering online and will run in the U14 or U16 Grade. Great for those preparing for Secondary School competitions.

Senior 20+ years (including Masters) typically run in the afternoon.  Events are open to registered club members as well as the general public who can register under a 1 Day Registration.  At the time of entry athletes, will be asked to submit a personal best time/height/distance in order to allow for seeding on the day.  This is a great opportunity for athletes to gain access to the best competiton or race along side similar ability athletes.

The program alters weekly with regular opportunites to participate in Championship Events.   We are fortunate to have a dedicated team of qualified officals who enforce the rules of Athletics NZ and enable performances to be recognised nationally by Athletics NZ Rankings.

You can keep up to date by following our Facebook page or going to our Events Page.

Youth 15-19 years join the senior Competition in the following age categories U20, U18, U16.  The online entry allows for seeding so youth get the opportunity to the best competition and/or to race against athletes of similar ability.  Unregistered High School athletes are encouraged to sign up for a one day registration at any time.
