Winter Season - April to September

Athletics Otago - Harriers

Cross-country runners are often referred to as “harriers,” which is short for “hare hunters”.  In the 1830s, schoolboys in England came up with a game they called Hares and Hounds, or simply “paper chasing.” The boys who were the “hares” would leave before everyone else and drop a trail of paper; the “hounds” would follow. The game mimicked a foxhunt in many ways.

Fast forward to today and organised running groups now chase personal bests or simply run for fitness.  The races have evolved to cover a wide variety of terrains from; cross country, trail, mountain & road.  Relays & team events are a huge part of Harrier's which cater for a wide variety of people and ages.

The Harrier season is a great way to keep fit, socialise with like minded people as well as complementing other sport or activities members take part in.

The Events cater for all age groups and abilities; offering a fantastic family activity, personal challenge or work place team bonding.  You can choose  to run or walk socillay or join one of our competitive races.

Don't wait for Summer, get the most out of your Yearly Membership (1 April 2024 to 31 March 2025) and have a go at the Harrier season.  Alternatively try a 1 Day Resistration at any time.
